We’re Soft Drinks Levy Ready!
In April 2016, the government proposed a new Levy on soft drinks that contain added sugar in order to tackle obesity, as currently two thirds of adults and 26% of 10-11 year olds are overweight.
Today this Levy has been activated meaning soft drink manufacturers that supply drinks containing over 5g of sugar per 100ml, will be subject to a Levy. See breakdown below.
Drinks Manufacturers’ Response
Many drinks manufacturers had already responded to this by reducing the sugar content in their products ahead of the change. Britvic has reformulated many of their ranges to offer more products that are exempt from the tax and LRS has reduced the sugar content of Lucozade by over half to 4.5g**.
With 22% of shoppers suggesting they had no awareness of the forthcoming tax*, we introduced information labels on to all of our existing cold drinks machines to detail the government Levy and make our end-consumers aware of the product price changes in reflection of this. Our customers have also been sent a letter detailing information of the government Soft Drinks Levy.
We’re also introducing additional lower sugar products to our range and continuing to revise our offering to help tackle obesity and offer our customers a wider choice. We’re proud to offer a range where over 70% of products contain less than 5g sugar.
